South Sudan is experiencing its hungriest year on record. It has already been hit by years of flooding, drought, and rising violence. Rising food and fuel prices are worsening the world's youngest country's already terrible starvation crisis.

Without immediate help, many people will starve. 

WHAT'S DRIVING HUNGER IN SOUTH SUDAN

Climate Extremes – Four years of unprecedented flooding in South Sudan have buried vast swaths of land, including farms. Since 2019, the country's wetlands, known as the Sudd, have tripled in size. This has resulted in widespread migration and increased hunger.

Conflict – Sudan's conflict, which began in mid-April when rival militaries clashed, has had a wide range of ramifications, affecting South Sudan and exacerbating existing triggers and drivers of conflict throughout South Sudan, including in Renk and Malakal, amid increased competition over scarce resources, economic hardship, and pre-existing communal tensions.

Rising Prices – The trend has been attributed to a number of variables, including: low internal supply and stock depletion during the lean season; devaluation of the local currency, primarily owing to dollar scarcity; and higher fuel prices, which affect transportation expenses, with most traders unable to replenish commodities, resulting in severe shortages and high prices.
